J-RICH will become the kingdom’s leading center for international technology transfer and cluster building.  |  20. January, 2017

TUM International opens up Cluster Innovation Center “J-RICH” in Jubail, Saudi Arabia

Munich. TUM International GmbH along with its local partners Jubail Industrial College (JIC) and Royal Commission of Jubail and Yanbu have launched the Jubail Research and Innovation ClusterHUB (J-RICH) in the frame of a two-day kick-off event in Jubail (Saudi Arabia) in January 2017.

J-RICH offers professional services in qualification, product development, knowledge transfer and cluster building in order to support Saudi Arabia’s “vision 2030” of developing a more diversified economy with a stronger participation of small and medium-sized enterprises. The center shall become the Gulf Region’s model of excellence in transforming theoretical knowledge into practical applications at the world’s most powerful petrochemical cluster in Jubail.

“I believe in innovation and when government, industry, and academia collaborate throughout the innovation process, dreams become realities“.

(Quote by Dr. Eid Al Hajri, JIC, Managing Director)

Cooperating with powerful partners such as Technische Universität München (TUM), the German–Saudi Arabian Liaison Office for Economic Affairs (GESALO), and industrial giants such as Sadara Petrochemical Company, J-RICH will realize pilot projects in applied research with a global visibility, focusing on aspects such as digitalization, urbanization and social innovation for a large range of industry sectors.

Still in 2017, the center will set the foundation of a Saudi-European entrepreneurship hub in Jubail, which will combine the power of global players such as Sadara, the creativity of both European and local start-ups and the knowledge and research infrastructure jointly provided by TUM and JIC.

J-RICH will qualify and operate well-equipped cluster management organizations at the standard of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative, thereby establishing strong ties with leading European clusters. Receiving full support from the kingdom’s Royal Commission, J-RICH is a first entry gate for European SME and cluster organizations which would like to participate in the creation of new value chains in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In the same context, JIC and TUM International GmbH along with their partners will organize in the coming months a series of workshops with leading local companies in order to identify the first set of applied research projects that will focus on finding innovative solutions for energy-efficient petrochemical operations, environmentally-clean engineering & manufacturing processes, converging industries, and technology transfer. The aim is to provide these industrial solutions locally through the newly-established Research & Innovation and Industrial Integration Centre at the campus of JIC as well as through the collaboration with TUM, when required. This calls for establishing a strong partnership between the academic and industrial sectors which is one of the objectives of this visit which lasted three days.

Other goals include initiating an incubation program, on the campus of JIC, that will fully support and/or operate startups and small & medium enterprises through the above-mentioned Research and Innovation Centre.

The German delegation also paid an official visit to the Royal Commission to exchange views and ideas on finding a common ground to serve the community according to the Saudi market needs and in alignment with the 2030 Kingdom’s Vision that calls for attracting local, regional and international investments.
